Every well designed space mixed colors and patterns. But the key formula for each space is going to be different. Everyone has different tastes and that’s totally okay. If you’re finding yourself stuck sometimes when pulling things together in a space and you’re a fan of modern bohemian style, I can totally give you some ideas to browse. And maybe you’ll love one of these pairings enough to want to bring it home. I’ll let you decide where these Tips for Bohemian Chic Style Textiles take you.
My favorite things to look for in fabrics are floral motifs, geometric patterns, whimsical touches like birds and globally influenced designs.
I’m going to use the bedroom as an example here. With so many opportunities for textiles in the space, it can can under or overwhelming fast. The drapes should play well with the bedding and the bedding should play well with the lampshades. Especially in a space that’s supposed to recharge and sooth, you’ll want the environment around you to be harmonious and beautiful.
Fabric Tips for Bohemian Chic Curtains
Curtains should be a bit of fun. Whether that be in color, in little details in the print, or the overall pattern. Drapery take up a chunk of visual space since they run vertically. They cover large areas of wall space when they’re closed. Here are some options to think about when making curtain choices.
A larger floral pattern stands out against it’s surroundings but still lends a romantic touch to the space (English Garden in Jade). Add a small nod to the southwest with a small subtle pattern on a deep yet beautiful colored curtain (Southwest Key in Agave). Bring that whimsical detail into the space with a curtain featuring a cockatiel in it’s pattern. Who wouldn’t smile after seeing that (Cockatiel in Icy White)? If things are busier elsewhere in the space, choosing a pattern in an interesting pattern but in a softer color can compliment many styles (Brushed Casablanca in Stone).
Fabric Tips for Bohemian Chic Pillows
Pillow arrangements are going to depend on the person. You may like layering pillows for depth and interest, you may like keeping it simple for sanity’s sake. Either way is totally okay. What I recommend doing is using three 20″ square pillows for the back layer for a queen size bed. This will give oomph to the pillow arrangement. It’ll give you a nice surface to lean against when sitting in bed. And are easy to stack in place when dressing the bed. Go with an easy color and pattern for this layer. Save the fun for smaller accent pillows that will go at the front of the arrangement.
Neutrals are totally bae here. A smaller pattern with a little geometric presence is classic for building your bedding (Copenhagen in Sand). For the bold choice, another nod to the southwest can be found in soft colors with strong geometric shapes (Southwestern Tile in Sunset). For a timeless choice, choose a neutral grey or brown pattern with a lot of white space (Brushed Casablanca in Stone). If you’re needing to punch up a bit of color, going with a print that incorporates a few complimentary colors can be a perfect direction to go in (Oriental Stripe in Succulent).
Fabric Tips for Bohemian Chic Lampshades
Lampshades really are a textile (just structured and not fun to cozy up with). They’re just one more opportunity to tie together a color scheme and add a pop of whimsy and/or color. I like using lampshades as an opportunity to bring in some fun with my decorating. But there are tons of rooms where going more neutral is perfectly needed. I think the choice will depend on how colorful you want the whole space to be. How cohesive it will feel if you add color/pattern in another spot in the room? What is your overall goal for the space? If you’re thinking hotel bohemian chic, you probably want to keep things mostly toned down. If you’re thinking caravan collector, then you’re probably in the right style for the “more is more” look.
Birds are my favorite choice for bringing in an ethereal, whimsical vibe to a space. And flamingoes are one of the happiest choices (Flamingo Frenzy). The modern approach to floral is a good choice when wanting to add a modern pop of color without being too abstract (Spring Bloom in Indigo Blue). When going for a subtle choice in color, a modern watercolor effect blends well (Bold Watercolor Stripes in Blues and Browns). And lastly, a bright floral makes a happy touch to a bedroom (English Garden in Jade).
I know 2 of the biggest pieces you will put in your room are the bedspread/coverlet/quilt/comforter/whatever-you-choose-to-go-with and the rug. All of these choices leave you with so many options because they’re perfect backdrop players. Check out my guide to area rugs 8×10 less than $150 where I’ve split options into different bohemian aesthetics.
Fabric Tips for Bohemian Chic Bedding
If you’ve chosen color in any of these other pieces, tie it into a more colorful bed dressing. Or let these other players stand out in the space and keep the bedding simple. You’ll want to balance bedding with the other fabrics in the room. Make sure the colors tie together by either being complimentary, the same, or neutral.
Implementing these Tips for Bohemian Chic Style Textiles will always create a well balanced space.
Of course, the question is always- what’s your favorite?
