You ever first see a trend and think, “nope, not for me.” That was, and still a little, me with the checkerboard trend. I’ve never liked checkerboard walls or floors. At least not enough to semi-permanently put it somewhere in my home. But I am still in pursuit of an interior design certificate and job so I try to embrace every trend. Afterall, every trend is perfect for someone. Since Checkerboard is the latest insta-trend, let’s look at some insta-examples.
Embracing The Latest Insta-Trend: Checkerboard
We were riding the arch trend for quite a long time. We were overdue to switch it up with something angular and geometric. Checkerboard patterns will always be timeless and a classic. Sometimes timeless and classic patterns have their turn in the spotlight though. Scroll the gram and you’ll see it creeping up everywhere. Everyone is doing some cool things with it to from accent walls, to tile, to walkways and art. It’s something you can’t go wrong embracing, if you’re into it.
Personally, I found myself put off by it initially. I don’t hate checkerboard. But I don’t love it. I found myself coming up with a blank when thinking where I’d use the pattern.
Then I started looking for inspiration to share with here and ideas started popping up. I think porches are a brilliant place for checkerboard. It’s been used so many times in the past because it just looks good. Both my primary residence and the house in North Carolina that I’m working on need the porch floors done. And I immediately thought it would go great in the Cozy Country Kitchen I’ve designed.

Less permanent ways to embrace Checkerboard:
If you’re looking to try out the trend without painting or tile installation, there’s are several easy ways to try the trend. Things like rugs, blankets, and peel and stick wallpaper are perfect ways to add a dash of checkerboard without a lot of commitment. To be honest, searching for these are what got me kinda excited about the trend. And maybe I’m just missing my old rugs, but I’m drooling for the rusty red checkered rug.
