It’s time for me to check in with my progress for The One Room Challenge (a 6 week room makeover challenge hosted by Calling It Home). Just to recap, the space I’ve chosen to makeover is my dining room and my plan is to give it a boho, jungle, global flavor.
So some things have gone wrong.
I’m still waiting on the lighting, spray paint, art, rug and wallpaper to arrive. I don’t start ordering supplies or make plans in advance for this challenge so this is a hiccup I always run into.
Here’s where we’really at:
And, the story that really causes self pity is the story behind why we still don’t have a dining room table. *insert crying emoji*
Week 3 of the challenge, where I’m making over a dining room and I have no dining table. I’m a mess, I swear.
So I was looking on Craigslist for a table and nothing I wanted was coming up in my area. Somehow I ended up on a different city’s CL and a table and 6 chairs popped up for 30 freaking dollars. It was going to be at least a 2 hour drive 1 way but with the 6 week deadline and no hope nearby, I sent an email inquiring about it.
I received a reply pretty quick. The seller said that if I could come out next day, I could have it for free. FREE. I though, “dreams do come true!”
So Saturday morning I loaded my kid, dog and husband into the old truck and we headed for Fredericksburg. It took 3 hours with some bad traffic but we got there.
When I spoke with the owner of the set (she sells made over furniture out of cute sheds) and told her why I was there, she said, “you’re the one here for the table? You’re never going to believe it!” Apparently a couple had been there just before us and said they were there for the table.
They stole my table, I tell you what. I cried for a good hours on the way back empty handed. You know, I work full time, Monday through Friday. So I don’t get a whole lot of time to spend with my family. Wasting away most of a Saturday and gas money blew and it was an emotional roller coaster for me.
But, the good news is that I’ve overcome that grief and I have a new plan. But that doesn’t make the next few weeks easier. Because now the To-Do list looks like this:
-
Built a dining room table
-
Find new chairs (like, 6 matching chairs)
-
Wainscoting on lower 2/3 of walls with 1 feature section above fireplace
-
Replace trim around windows, doors and baseboards
-
Resize fireplace mantle and surround I’ve had sitting in the garage.
-
Paint lots of things
-
Install new lighting
Probably going to cut it really close. But that’s OK! I’m certain I’ll get most, if not all, of this done before 6 weeks is up.

Your room looks just like mine right now!! LOL. Everything is everywhere and there is no moment on my part. I love the hints I see for the artwork!

Oh my gosh, that’s horrible!!! I can’t believe how rotten of luck that it. I’m sorry! BUT, I can’t wait to see what you build. It’s going to be great. You go this.

My heart broke when I read that! UGH. But the optimist in me says you’ll find the perfect table and chairs, and that wasn’t the set for you.
Stacey says
How rude! They shouldn’t have sold the table out from under you. I’m sure you told them how far you were driving. Keep looking..you might find something again. If you can’t finish all of this in 6 weeks it’s not the end of the world. You want to love it and have it turn out like you envision. 🙂
We’d love for you to link up this post with us at Thoughts of Home on Thursday. Our readers would enjoy seeing your progress.

That is so heartbreaking! I definitely would have cried into my wine glass late into the night. Best of luck with everything!

That is such a bummer about the table! I know exactly how you feel! The same thing happened to me with a couch set. It was beautiful, perfect and clean. When we went to pick it up on the set time, the people weren’t even home, just their daughter. They dodged our calls after that. I shed a few tears as well. Luckily for us it wasn’t a huge drive to go get it. I hope you find something else just as great!

So sorry to hear that it was sold under you, but it just means that something more awesome will take its place. Chin up girl, you will have that dining room looking beautiful in NO time!
Anna Smith says
Oh no! That sucks — so sorry you had to waste the time. I can’t wait to see it come together though!
Maggie @ Maggie Overby Studios says
How terrible, I don’t do a ton of Craiglist shopping for this very reason, too much logistic involved. Maybe something even better will turn up. Good luck!
Reviving Charm says
Oh, so sorry! I bet in the end you’ll love your handmade table more than any table you could ever buy ( or get for free!)
Tammy says
Oh My!!! That is horrible! I can’t believe someone else took the table. Hang in there!
Danielle says
That is just wrong! I would have been devastated! It will work out though.
Kristin @ Postbox Designs says
OH that is so awful…I have a feeling you are going to come up with something even MORE amazing and are going to be glad you didn’t get that table in the end…can’t wait to see it!!! It will all be worth it in the end 🙂
Amanda @ Old House to New Home says
OMG! I would have been so upset and I don’t blame you for crying!! I hope things go better this week!

That is the saddest story ever about the table! I’m so sorry!
