The past six months I’ve really dived into the crazy cat lady life. In the good way. Well, avoiding dealing with the grief of losing my beloved dog and cat last year isn’t so good. But, I’m told my house doesn’t smell like cat by multiple people. And that brings me to my topic of the day: cat litter boxes.
The inevitable unpleasant part of owning cats. I, like most if not all cat owners, struggle with the odors that creep from their doo-ty station (cringe pun, I know). It’s important to me to avoid fragranced cat litters because they’re irritating to my asthma and skin and so I wonder how it affects them. And, I have a senior cat that struggles to get in and out of boxes. All that together leaves scents to travel throughout the area around them.
This leaves me hypervigilant in scooping and dumping litter. And therefore spending an unusually large amount of time around the litter box. Naturally, I now want a cute litter box and I came across so many options I didn’t even know existed.
Favorite Cat Litter Boxes
The Travel Box
Okay, surely I should have figured this existed but I never thought about cat and travel together long enough to consider it. How I would have loved to take my Zen on trips with me. The description claims it’s as light as a cellphone and folds to the size of a wallet. Impressive.
The Eco Friendly Box
It’s pretty important to me to use plastic-free alternatives when it doesn’t add significant extra work to use. And this not only doesn’t add extra work, but it eliminates a problem. Eventually all plastic litter boxes get the irreversible cat pee smell. It just soaks into the plastic. Can’t happen with stainless steel! There’s higher sided ones and even very shallow ones for the very arthritic but I’m looking at one in the middle to make it easier on my senior that’s started having trouble getting in and out of the box.
The Top Entry
The top entry cat litter boxes are brilliant for the non arthritic cat. One of my “barn cats” has learned that life inside is pretty great and so he oftentimes will spend a day or so with us. But alas that means he needs a place to relieve himself. Unlike the senior, Frito, this cat likes to dig and bury and so some litter will end up outside the box. Thankfully not a lot but I think a box with the brilliant slotted top like this one would work well for him. That way most of the litter stuck to his paws will fall right through the slats.
The Incognito
Sure many cat owners may be able to spot the piece of furniture disguising a cat litter box but I think we can all agree it’s lightyears more attractive. I’ve always had the concern that the furniture material would eventually absorb the odors and the inevitable missed shots but with the right set up and upkeep it’ll probably last long enough.
The Eco Friendly Disposable
I had had an idea of most options when it comes to litter boxes but one thing I’d never considered was a made from recycled material disposable. Oftentimes the disposable option is a wasteful option and while any disposable is still a wasteful option, these do it better. 100% recycled cardboard and the innovative sifting tray appear to be much more pleasant than the traditional scoop.
Just Because It’s Cute
I can’t resist the cute option when it comes to anything and the only reason I won’t be snatching this one up is the size. Oh, and the grumpy old man cat will absolutely find a way to make clean up miserable. But, look, it’s so cute. I think it could compliment existing home decor well if you’ve got a complimentary color scheme and/or style.
One hell of a bonus…
Look, I’m already decided on what I’ll be scooping up (heh) but the temptation to put it inside of this beauty is strong. Now pictures are always misleading and the dimensions on this would never work for my cat but it’s not stopping me from making googly eyes at it. It’s wicker, who wouldn’t love that? Maybe I’ll just make it a hidden kitty bed condo instead of a litter enclosure.
While I’m awaiting the arrival of our new and improved cat litter box – Oh, did I even say why I’m box shopping after all this time? I’ve been using a storage tub that I cut down but it’s proving difficult for the old cat. Anyways, while that’s on the way here’s a fun shot of goofy cat staring hungrily at my nachos. He’s truly adorably goofy.
